The Mer de Grace, the biggest glacier in France, has 7km in length and 200m depth. Its descending speed is about 90m per year at the bottom around the Montenvers rack railway station (1,913 m). The Mer de Grace has been receding rapidly over the 20th century most likely due to the global warming effect. This young male alpine ibex looking over his shoulder towards the melting Mer de Grace made me wonder how this picture would have looked if it was taken a decade later.
